CompTIA Network+ N10-006: Network Operations Part 2

Network administrators, network technicians, network installers, helpdesk technicians, IT cable installers and any other professional working with computer networks

Prerequisite
None

Expected Duration
105 minutes

Description
Networks are the basic structure behind modern communication design. From a small business connecting three user computers with a domain controller for central management, to the Internet itself, the architecture and operation of a network governs how devices are able to talk to each other. Networks provide a way to centrally manage devices and to apply much needed security. In this course, you’ll learn elements involved with the operation of your network including patching and updating network devices and computer systems, switch configuration, as well as how to install and configure Wireless LANs. This course is one of a series in the SkillSoft learning path that covers the objectives for certification exam CompTIA Network+ N10-006.

Objective

Patching and Updating

  • start the course
  • describe how device driver and operating system updates are disseminated and applied, and their importance
  • describe how network device firmware updates are applied and their importance
  • describe the scope of changes and updates released for computer system components
  • describe vulnerability patches, their use, and how they are applied
  • describe the process of downgrading a computer system, including backing up existing configuration

Switch Configuration

  • describe VLAN configuration, its purpose, and the use of VLAN Trunking Protocol (VTP)
  • describe Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) and Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol (RSTP) and how they are used in switched networks
  • describe switch interface configuration options, including default gateway configuration for multilayer switches
  • describe switch management options, and options for network devices such as IP phones
  • contrast managed and unmanaged switches

Installing and Configuring a Wireless LAN

  • describe the use and considerations for deploying small office/home office wireless routers, wireless access points, and wireless bridges
  • describe Wireless LAN site surveys, the frequencies of signals, WiFi channels, and how these affect the amount of usable application layer bandwidth, or goodput
  • describe the 802.11a-ht and 802.11g-ht wireless LAN standards
  • describe the function and usage of antennas in wireless networking
  • describe the purpose of service set identifiers in 802.11 WiFi networks
  • compare and contrast the different topologies used by wireless networking technologies
  • describe the types of devices that have wireless networking connections and the types of connections they are likely to have

Practice: Wireless Network Basics

  • install and configure wireless networks
