DCICN 1.0: Ethernet Networks

Data center network engineers and learners embarking on a network administration or engineering career who wish to expand their skills in data center networks

Expected Duration
85 minutes

In order to understand how networks function, it is important to gain a basic understanding of the major components of networks. This course explains the major components of networks by introducing fundamental computer and network components. Once completed, you will be able to list the types and functions of the connection components of an Ethernet LAN. In this course, you will also learn about the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) reference model and data communications terms and concepts and you will be able to describe each of the OSI layers. Finally, after completing this course, you will be able to explain how to use an Ethernet LAN to create a host network. This course is one of a series in the Skillsoft learning path that covers the objectives for Cisco exam 640-911: Introducing Cisco Data Center Networking.

Networking Functions

  • start the course
  • define a network
  • match common physical components of a network to their description
  • describe the impact of user applications on the network
  • describe the performance and structure characteristics of a network
  • describe methods of connecting to the Internet

The Host-to-Host Communications Model

  • define the purpose of the OSI reference model
  • match the OSI layer to its function
  • describe the purposes and functions of the TCP/IP suite in data communications
  • describe the process of encapsulation and de-encapsulation
  • describe how peer-to-peer communication works

Ethernet Connections

  • describe the function of the network interface card
  • differentiate between Ethernet connection types
  • describe characteristics of unshielded twisted pair
  • compare straight-through versus crossover UTP implementation

Ethernet Communications Standards

  • describe the components and functions of a LAN
  • describe the evolution of Ethernet
  • describe how the Ethernet frame communicates with the LAN
  • describe the function of the MAC address in an Ethernet LAN

Practice: Ethernet Network Operations

  • describe Ethernet network components and functions
