Microsoft Windows – Deploying Windows Devices and Enterprise Apps: Images & PXE

IT professionals who deploy, manage, and maintain client computers, devices, and applications in a network infrastructure

Prerequisite
None

Expected Duration
101 minutes

Description
To deploy Windows devices and applications images can be created. These images contain the operating system, applications and custom configurations and then deployed to specific devices using various deployment tools. The deployment can be automated using answer files. This course discusses and shows how to create and manage images using DISM and WDS, as well as how PXE and multicast OS deployments work. This course is one in a series of Skillsoft courses to help prepare for the 70-695 Deploying Windows Devices and Enterprise Apps certification exam.

Objective

Plan an Image Strategy

  • start the course
  • identify the different types of images that current Windows environments use and their benefits
  • identify the considerations required for managing operating system images
  • describe what boot and install images are and when to use each
  • describe the three primary strategies used for image creation: Thick, thin, hybrid
  • describe online and offline servicing
  • describe how drivers can be added and managed in an image

The Windows Setup Process

  • describe installation types for Windows Setup and the Windows setup phases
  • describe how to control and automate the Windows setup process using answer files and the configuration process
  • describe Windows PE and its benefits and limitations
  • add drivers and optional components to a Windows PE image

Automate and Prepare Images

  • create an answer file using Windows SIM
  • describe how sysprep is used to prepare for a Windows installation, including its benefits, scenarios, and its process
  • install a reference computer using a custom answer file and verify the settings were applied
  • place a reference computer in audit mode using sysprep, make configuration changes, and capture the settings and preserve the image

Capture and Service Images

  • determine which partitions to capture and prepare to capture an image using DISM
  • create an image using DISM
  • use DISM to mount and modify an image
  • service an image using DISM, including checking patches and adding packages, enabling features, and adding drivers
  • service an image using DISM, including enabling features and adding drivers

PXE and WDS

  • describe PXE-initiated OS deployments, including the benefits, requirements, and how it works
  • describe how to use multicast for operating system deployments, including its components and considerations
  • describe the installation options, images type support, and the considerations
  • install and configure the WDS environment
  • install and configure the WDS environment
  • explain how to deploy VHD using WDS

Practice: Image Creation and WDS

  • capture and create images on a reference computer, describe PXE and multicast, and install and configure WDS
