SPNGN1 1.0: IPv4 Subnetting and VLSM

This course is targeted at networking engineers who must interface with Cisco IOS, IOS XR and IOS XE devices. Additionally, those who have a need to understand technologies used in the service provider realm will benefit.

Prerequisite
None

Expected Duration
84 minutes

Description
Originally IP addressing was based on the address classes of A, B, and C. These address classes did not offer administrators sufficient options for scaling and stretching IP addresses. IP addressing techniques such as VLSM and FLSM break the rules of the classful system of IP and allow one classful network to address many different networks. Mastery of subnetting approaches first takes exposure to the fundamental techniques. In this course, you’ll learn about these techniques. This course is one of a series in the Skillsoft learning path that covers the objectives for the Cisco exam Building Cisco Service Provider Next-Generation Networks Part 1 exam (640-875 SPNGN1). This exam counts toward the CCNA Service Provider certification.

Objective

Explaining IP Addressing and Subnets

  • start the course
  • describe the characteristics of flat topologies
  • describe what a subnet mask does
  • describe the nature of an octet in an IP address
  • describe the function of VLSM
  • describe the role a subnet mask plays on a host
  • describe the role of the default gateway
  • describe how routers use subnet masks
  • applying IP subnetting
  • calculate subnets created for a class C network
  • calculate subnets created for a class B and A networks
  • identify subnet zero and the all-ones subnet
  • use the procedure for implementing subnets
  • describe Cisco’s 8-step IP subnetting technique
  • describe the impact of applying a subnet mask to a class C address
